SHILLONG, Dec 21: Amidst a sudden increase in Covid-19 cases in some states, owing to a new variant, Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh has advised people to resort to self-imposed precautions.
She asserted that the Union Health Ministry has given the impression that the new variant is not causing much of a concern.
“We are however continuing with our Covid-19 preparedness,” she said, making it clear that the state would not face any situation where restrictions would have to be imposed on movement of people.
Speaking about the existing infrastructure, she said the state has several ICU beds, adequate supply of oxygen, and trained paramedics.  Meanwhile, a statement from the Health Department said the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme is under way and there has been no unusual increase seen in respiratory illness.
However, taking note of the festive season, the Health officials have advised citizens to wear masks in closed indoor spaces, maintain hand hygiene and avoid large gatherings. Those with comorbidities such as hypertension, diabetes, kidney diseases etc., should take additional precautions if they have fever or severe flu like symptoms, it added.
Minister admits to 108 tender anomalies
The Health minister on Thursday admitted that certain anomalies have been detected in the ongoing tendering for appointing a new 108 ambulance service provider and the government is currently seeking advice of the Chief Minister on the matter.
Lyngdoh said the anomalies may put the government in legal trouble and hence the government wants to avoid it.
She also said that the Health department is seeking advice from the Law department and other line departments on the matter.
She also stated that the government is open to the idea of issuing a fresh tender for the 108 services.
