SHILLONG, Dec 22: The 19th wine festival was inaugurated at Ward’s Lake on Friday, almost as a toast to the festive season.
Organised by Forever Young and supported by Meghalaya Tourism and the Meghalaya Farmers (Empowerment) Commission, the festival featured 13 wine stalls and several other food and activity stalls.
Set against the serene backdrop of Wards Lake, the festival had people of all ages tasting wines and capturing moments for their digital updates.
Wine-making was legalized in Meghalaya in September 2020, a tradition that was long prevalent in the state as a hobby for many.
Tourism Minister, Paul Lyngdoh graced the event as the chief guest and mentioned that the state government would consider establishing a special economic zone for wine-making. Expressing his vision of Meghalaya becoming the fruit wine capital soon, Lyngdoh emphasized the need to optimize the natural resources bestowed by nature.
The distinguished guests included KN Kumar, Commissioner, Meghalaya Farmers (Empowerment) Commission (MFEC), BK Sohliya, Executive Advisor, MFEC, Brian K Daly, President,
Meghalaya Fruit Wine Makers Association, and Daniel Syiem representing Forever Young on the dais.
KN Kumar advocated for a wine and meat development board and the promotion of wine tourism.
He stated, “If we allow tourists to explore the winery and witness the fantastic process of wine-making, as is done in Nashik, we can promote our entrepreneurs. Additionally, tourists can purchase a bottle or two, spreading the word through positive experiences.”
