Shillong, Jan 5: A stunning mural that captures the spirit of Meghalaya’s rich cultural diversity on the façade of the Deputy Commissioner’s office building here was inaugurated by Tourism Minister, Paul Lyngdoh on Friday.
The mural, a testament to Mario Pathaw’s skill and creativity, adds a burst of colour and culture to the administrative hub.
During the inauguration, Lyngdoh expressed his admiration for the artist’s work, emphasising the importance of promoting local talent to enhance the cultural vibrancy of the region.
He said that the mural was carefully crafted to depict the essence of ‘Root and Rhythm’, and captures the spirit of Meghalaya’s cultural diversity. The artwork not only serves as an aesthetic addition to the deputy commissioner’s office but also symbolises the harmony between tradition and contemporary expression.
“What we have done today is to encourage the tourists to not only be mesmerized by our natural beauty but also to step into immersive tourism,” he said.
Lyngdoh further said that Meghalaya has so much to offer to the rest of the world if you think in terms of each of our waterfalls having stories, the hills, even the sky, and each facet of nature has a rich history.
‘In 2023 Meghalaya received not less than 15 lakh visitors from across the world, which is an achievement for our state’, the minister added.
As Meghalaya continues to celebrate its cultural richness, initiatives like these reflect a collective effort to preserve and promote the unique artistic heritage of the region.
The unveiling ceremony witnessed the presence of East Khasi Hills, Deputy Commissioner, RM Kurbah, along with other officials and dignitaries.
The collaboration between the Indian Foundation and Asian Paints and the Meghalaya government underscores a shared commitment to promoting and preserving the cultural heritage of the region.
