SHILLONG, Jan 12: Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma on Friday asked – if students from other parts of the country can crack the Indian Civil Service examination and become IAS and IPS, why the students of Meghalaya can’t be successful.
Admitting that the State still lags behind in producing IAS and IPS, he said that this should be taken up as a challenge by the students of the State and they should be encouraged to perform.
He also raised questions that apart from the rest of the country, if the students from neighbouring states like Assam and Arunachal Pradesh can excel in these completive exams why not their counterparts from Meghalaya.
Stating that the state government will do its bit in shouldering the responsibility, he asked the teachers and the students to do their part.
“I would like to request my dear students to shoulder their own responsibility in carrying on their own academic career for the pride and future of our state,” he said. He also requested the teachers to brief the students well with the concept of the topic and the subject.
Earlier, the state government has flagged concern over Meghalaya’s performance in the UPSC Civil Services Examination in recent times.
It may be mentioned that the last tribal candidate from Meghalaya to ace the UPSC CSE was Isawanda Laloo, which was back in 2012.
After her, no tribal candidate had cleared the examination and secured the coveted posts. Two other candidates, Ankur Das and Swapnil Bhattacharya, however, cleared the UPSC CSE in 2022 and 2023 respectively.
