SHILLONG, Jan 13: Confident that voters in the Khasi-Janitia Hills will support the regional forces in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the United Democratic Party (UDP) is set to begin its campaigning in February.
Stating that the party, backed by another regional party, the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP), under the umbrella of the Regional Democratic Alliance (RDA), has already prepared its groundwork since the candidate for Shillong was announced, Metbah Lyngdoh, Mairang legislator, is confident that they will be victorious in Shillong.  Even though the party faces a tough battle against political giants like the Congress and NPP, Lyngdoh seems assured that the regional party will wrest the torch from Congress in Shillong. The UDP, having established itself as the second-largest party in the state with 12 MLAs, is confident of a superlative performance in the Lok Sabha polls this year.
The party, enjoying a position of strength in Khasi-Jaintia Hills with a large number of MLAs and MDCs, is hopeful that the MP from Shillong would be from the UDP. The UDP is also banking on its performance and ability to provide stability to mobilize support for the elections to the KHADC and JHADC this year. The party has been a formidable force at the district council level.
