SHILLONG, Jan 14: UDP general secretary Jemino Mawthoh on Sunday urged the state government to zero in on the repair of roads in the state which, he posited, are only deteriorating by the day.
“Shillong is a beautiful place and a sought-after tourist hotspot. It will be a bad reflection if the road condition is deplorable in the state. Whether in rural or urban area, the roads have to be good. If they’re good, it reflects the developmental aspect of the state,” he said.
Citing complaints received from various quarters about the poor condition of roads, he said, “It is time that the department and the government take serious note of this. What needs to be spent or what needs to earmarked, this has to be top priority. If roads are good it will augur well for the state also”.
He recalled that earlier whenever potholes would develop, repair work would be carried out immediately.
Pointing out that in areas like the MeS, the road condition is usually bad, Mawthoh said the MeS as well as the state government needs to coordinate for repair work and construction of pavements.
In view of the schools reopening soon, the UDP general secretary said that after the heavy use of the road beginning the restart of schools, the monsoon will arrive again, adding that the government should move at a faster pace and repair the roads during winter.
