Shillong, Jan 17: President Droupadi Murmu’s scheduled visit to Assam’s Karbi Anglong district to attend the golden jubilee celebrations of the Karbi Youth Festival was cancelled due to inclement weather.
The President, who was scheduled to fly out of Shillong at 10 am, had to wait for five and a half hours because of unfavourable weather in Diphu, Assam, before flying back to Delhi.
The President’s helicopter finally departed from the helipad located at 7 Mile, Upper Shillong, at 3.30 pm.
Earlier in the day, the President unveiled bust-sized statues of three Meghalaya freedom fighters: U Tirot Singh, U Kiang Nangbah, and Pa Togan Sangma.
The sculptures were created by the city-based Riti Academy of Visual Arts.
The President was accompanied by Governor Phagu Chauhan, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh and senior officials.
Additionally, the President planted a tree at Raj Bhavan prior to her departure from Shillong.
