TURA: Showcasing the importance of deliverance system for the rural areas and the need to improve the education scenario in the State, Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma on Monday distributed bicycles to as many as 300 student beneficiaries from different villages under his constituency of Ampati through the Centrally-sponsored SRWP scheme in the presence of senior government officials, nokmas and gaonburas, teachers, students and parents.

The bicycles came as part of the Chief Minister’s attempt to help the students of far-flung villages so that they can save time and energy spent on travelling to and fro school and concentrate on more on their studies. Last year, approximately 500 bicycles were distributed to the student beneficiaries of the area under the same scheme.

In his address to the parents and students, Dr. Sangma recalled his hardships during his school life when he was unable to afford a bicycle to go to school and empathised with the students in rural areas who have to walk miles to school every day.

He said, these bicycles were being distributed to them with a purpose which is to enable the students to use their time more productively and to minimise the use of fuel by using bicycles as a mode of transport and thereby control environmental degradation.

Lamenting about the poor performance of the students in the last Board exams, Dr. Sangma said there is a need to study the reasons for the poor show, particularly in the rural areas and sought more active involvement and motivation from parents.

If parents could bring up their children in the spirit of determination and hard work, they would automatically see transformation in their own lives, he said
