Guwahati: Work in government offices across Assam was hit on Wednesday as about 4.5 lakh employees of the state government resorted to a strike protesting non-payment of arrears.
The Sadou Asom Karmachari Parishad (SAKP)-led the strike that was staged from 1000 hours to 1400 hours.
The protesting employees staged demonstrations at the district headquarters, and centrally near Dispur Last Gate here.
The employees union’s demands include payment of accumulated arrears and regularisation of muster roll, casual and fixed pay employees, among others.
The state government employees had ‘temporarily withdrawn’ their agitation after a meeting with the chief minister on September 18 last.
The SAKP is the apex body of the 4.5 lakh-strong workforce of the state government.
‘We were invited by the chief minister for a discussion on September 18. We were told that another round of meeting will be held within a month, but so far it has not happened,’ SAKP president Basav Kalita said.
Two main demands of the organisation are payment of 33 months’ arrears to the employees and a hike in the fixed pay of casual employees and muster roll workers of the state government.
The SAKP has threatened to hold a mass demonstration in Guwahati on November eight next if the state government did not give a positive response to their demands by then. (UNI)
