SHILLONG, Feb 7: As many as 120 Self-help Groups (SHGs) and beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY-WDC 2.0) were handed over cheques by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma at the State Convention Centre here on Wednesday. The event had in attendance SHGs from all across the state.
Sangma urged the SHG members to utilise the seed money judiciously
to ensure the successful implementation of the new watershed programme. He asserted that “all researches and studies are indicating towards a major water crisis.” “Meghalaya is blessed to have enough water resources but the issue is with the management of water. Through the years, we have not been able to manage our water resources efficiently and optimally,” he added.
He also mentioned the need for a two-pronged approach whereby the resources will be managed but, at the same time, people will have an alternative source of livelihood for a successful outcome that is sustainable.
Following that, he acknowledged that it has been a huge challenge for the government insofar as conservation of the water resources is concerned.
Minister of Soil and Water Conservation, Marcuise N Marak, Commissioner and Secretary, Soil and Water Conservation department, Joram Beda, were also present on the occasion.
