SHILLONG, Feb 7: Cabinet Minister and local MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh, on Wednesday, said no vendor zones have to be operationalised in Laitumukhrah in view of the increasing number of hawkers.
Lyngdoh said she, as an MLA, is merely looking for a way out of this difficult situation. “It has become very inconvenient for us; next to impossible. If schools start, it becomes more difficult and the numbers of hawkers are increasing”.
“We have to operationalise the ‘No Vendor Zone’ and it is not me who is saying it, it’s an Act which says it,” she added.
The proposed move of the state government to move hawkers from Laitumkhrah main road to Veronica Lane had met with some opposition.
Lyngdoh said that she met a group of citizens who are in some way affected by the relocation plan of hawkers to Veronica Lane. “…it will be next to impossible for all groups to be on a common thought,” she added.
“My appeal to all concern is that we will have to address this concern and hawkers have a right, there is a hawker committee in place vendors committee in place these are all authorised committees. I am just a mere MLA who does not belong to any committee but who feels responsible and wants to sort this problem,” she added.
She expressed hope that they will be able to discuss the matter across the table with the right authorities.
