SHILLONG, Feb 13: More than 30,000 people who pay professional tax to the KHADC will now be able to do it online.
The provision for online payment of professional tax was jointly launched by Executive Member in-charge Information Technology (IT), Grace Mary Kharpuri and Executive Member in-charge Taxation Fantin J Lakadong in the presence of other Executive Members — Carnes Sohshang and Victor Rani — besides senior officials of the Council.
Speaking on the occasion, Kharpuri said that the people will no longer need to visit the Council office to pay the professional tax since they can now do it online. She said that it is an achievement since they have been trying to introduce the e-filing of the professional tax for a very long time.
According to her, they wanted to introduce this online system since 2009.
Informing that that they have been coordinating with the National Informatics Centre (NIC), the EM in-charge IT said that it took time for things to materialise since the software was not ready.
Meanwhile, Lakadong said that he has been coordinating to see that they would start the online system for payment of professional tax after taking over as the EM in-charge of Taxation.
He said that the department can now engage the staff for field work since it will reduce the burden of manpower with this new system.  Lakadong said the Council will soon start the online system even for Ri-Bhoi and West Khasi Hills. “Currently we are starting with Shillong. In the next two days, people can e-file their professional tax,” he added.
Replying to a query, Lakadong said that the Council is earning revenue of Rs 5 crore annually from the professional tax.
The EM said that they expect this new initiative to help enhance the revenue of the Council. Lakadong said that the leakage in revenue will be minimised with the introduction of this online system.
