Tripura to have border haat by early next year

Agartala: Tripura will have full-fledged operational border haat by early next year at Krishnapur, a border village of state’s southernmost subdivision- Sabroom.
Foundation stone for the border haat was laid at Krishnapur (India)-Madhugram (Bangladesh) in presence of top officials from both sides on Sunday.
Addl DM of Bangladesh’s Feni district Md Abdul Hasem and Addl DM of South Tripura district Sarabindhu Chowdhury were present in the foundation stone laying ceremony.
As per the plan, the border haat will be set up in an area covering 75 square km from both sides with an estimated cost of Rs. 2.38 crore. The construction of necessary facilities- sheds, toilets, barrack and separate room for customs officials will done within next three months.
A preliminary discussion between two Add DMs was held in the office of Krishnanagar Gram Panchayat. In the meeting it was decided the haat will be opened once in a week from 1.30 pm to 4.30 pm. Necessary passes would be issued to those who are interested in setting up ventures in the proposed border haat.
MLA Rita Kar, who was also present at the foundation stone laying ceremony said the opening of border haat would certainly pave the way for better bilateral ties between two sides.
“The initiative will have a long-term impact on the socio economic development of the entire Sabroom subdivision as the state government has been persistently persuading to construct a bridge on River Feni to connect Sabroom with Bangladesh,” she said.
Earlier technocrats of the two countries had completed the survey for constructing the 150-metre long bridge and submitted their survey reports to the concerned ministries which approved the proposal.
Approximately, Rs 73 crore would be spent to construct the bridge which would be borne by the Tripura government, the sources said.
