TURA, Feb 15: The opposition to the alleged illegal stone quarry at Budugre village in Chokpot of South Garo Hills gained momentum on Thursday, with the local unit of the GSU issuing a ‘final warning’ to the quarry owner to remove all equipment from the site immediately.
The warning letter was served to quarry owner Alpha D Marak.
The warning by the GSU comes after repeated requests made to stop the activity went unheeded. The union, along with other local organizations and villagers has been opposing the quarry as they feel it is doing harm to the area as the site is only 60 metres from the Dareng River, on which the people depend daily.
“Kindly remove your LNT Machine before February 20 or we shall be force take steps on our own,” it said.
Meanwhile, a copy of the letter has also been forwarded to the Chokpot SDO, SDPO and the Officer in-charge of Chokpot Police Station.
