State to skip national football competition

SHILLONG: After the tremendous success of the state in youth football tournaments recently comes an unfortunate development as the Youth Development Cell of the Meghalaya Football Association has decided not to participate in the upcoming Under-14 National Football Championship, which is scheduled to be held at Kalyani, Kolkata, from November 10-22.
Informing this here on Monday, Youth Development Cell chairman Hering Shangpliang said that they have taken this decision since the majority of the players who were selected for the Meghalaya team were found to have crossed 14 years of age.
Out of the 30 players which were shortlisted during the selection trial, Shangpliang said that 26 failed the screening test.
“There were only four players who have cleared the screening test,” he said.
He however warned they would take stringent against the clubs or any individual players if  such things are repeated in the future.
