SHILLONG, Feb 19: TMC leader Mukul Sangma has asked the state government to take a fresh look at the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA) instead of dumping it in cold storage and playing politics on it.
Speaking to media persons here on Monday, Sangma termed the MRSSA as one of the best laws in the world to deal with influx and illegal immigration and said it was formulated after detailed discussions with stakeholders.
He lamented that while countries such as the US are grappling with the problem of illegal immigration, the state government has shelved MRSSA, an exhaustive piece of legislation addressing the core issue of influx.
Talking about the stalled peace talks with the HNLC, Sangma said the discussions should be held with the aim of building trust and confidence.
He recalled that under his leadership, the state was able to successfully hold peace talks with several outfits although the settlement agreements are yet to be implemented by the government of the day.
