SHILLONG: A day after suspected GNLA militants gunned down five police personnel in Garo Hills, the State Police have asserted that operational commanders are looking at fresh strategies to tackle militants.
Talking to media persons here in the city on the sideline of a condolence meeting, Additional DGP, SK Jain, said that the police are collecting details of the incident that led to the death of five police personnel on Tuesday.
Reacting to a query over the probability of the police resorting to ‘eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth’ approach against the militants, the senior police official dismissed the same, stating that the police are governed by law and they have to adhere to the law of the land.
He, however, admitted that it was time for the State Police to adopt a dynamic and productive approach to ensure better results in the fight against militancy.
“As they (militants) change their strategies, we also need to change ours,” the police official said.
When asked if the State Police would seek for additional forces to contain militancy, Jain asserted that there is sufficient police presence in all the districts of the State.
He, however, added that additional forces would boost the strength of the State Police.
Reacting to queries on why bulletproof vehicles were not provided for the slain police personnel who were deputed for duty in a militancy-infested area like Baghmara, Jain said that such vehicles are provided based on the threat perception.
He stated that the State Police had a large number of bulletproof vehicles, but such vehicles cannot be deployed in all stretches due to the treacherous and hostile terrain.
Meanwhile, Home Minister Roshan Warjri on Tuesday informed media persons that the State Government has adopted some strategies in the fight against militancy, which cannot be revealed at the moment.
She also informed that strategy reviews are being conducted by the Government.
