SHILLONG: The State police have constituted an internal inquiry into the killing of five policemen by suspected Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militants in South Garo Hills on Tuesday.

Informing this here on Thursday, DGP PJP Hananman said the inquiry would be conducted by Heimonlang Nongpluh, Inspector-General of Police (Western Range).

Hananman, , who had returned to Shillong after taking stock of the situation in South Garo Hills following the deadliest attacks by GNLA, said that he (Nongpluh) would be given a specific timeframe to complete the inquiry.

Meanwhile, the State police have claimed that it had got some leads into the Tuesday’s attack in South Garo Hills district.

Informing this, the South Garo Hills SP DR Marak on Thursday, however, refused to divulge further saying it would hamper the investigation.

He said that the district police already launched a massive combing operation to trace those involved in the killing of five police personnel.

Marak admitted that the morale of the district police had gone down after the incident “but we are on the job to catch the culprits.”

He said that police had issued advisories and all personnel were directed to remain on alert especially while travelling.

When asked why the police personnel were not provided a bullet proof vehicle when they were travelling in a militancy-infested area, he said there were six such vehicles in the district out of which two were not in working condition and the four others were being used in the movement of forces in other areas of the district.

Five police personnel of Meghalaya police were killed in a indiscriminate firing by GNLA militant when they were heading to Tura from Baghmara to bring back an under-trial prisoner (UTP) for court hearings.
