SHILLONG, March 6: The state government on Wednesday made yet another assurance that the appointment of the much-looked-forward-to Chairperson of Meghalaya State Commission for Women (MSCW) will be made ‘in a matter of weeks’.
‘In a matter of weeks,’ said Minister in charge Social Welfare Minister, Paul Lyngdoh when enquired about the status of appointment of the MSCW chairperson.
Asked for the names, he said, “There are a couple of names but these require the approval of the chief minister and we will share the information as and when he approves”.
In February this year, Lyngdoh informed that as many as six contenders are running for the position of Meghalaya MSCW Chairperson and two more applications had been received in addition to the four names recommended by the government-appointed search committee.
“We wanted complete transparency and to give everybody a fair chance, we said we would go beyond the names recommended by the search committee, which is why we went asking for applications through advertisement from interested candidates and two more applications have reached us,” Lyngdoh had said, expressing the state government’s desire for total transparency throughout the process.
The MSCW has been without a chairperson since Phidalia Toi resigned in June 2023.
According to inside sources, the commission’s overall operation has suffered due to the delay in selecting a new chairperson.
