SHILLONG: Glasses of traditional homemade wine being enjoyed by wine tasting enthusiasts in the backdrop of Crinoline Swimming Pool, creating the perfect ambience for wine lovers in the city.

Many wine lovers of the city on Saturday thronged the Crinoline Swimming Pool to taste the fruit wine which is not easily available in the market.

Speaking to media persons about the festival, Forever Young Club president Michael Syiem demanded the State Government to legalise wine-making in the State which would go a long way in improving the economy of the State.

“Mizoram, which is a dry state, has amended the Prohibition Act two times to pave way for fruit wine then why can’t Meghalaya do the same,” Syiem said while speaking to reporters.

He said that the State has tremendous potential but the State Government needs to legalize it to get the wine sector of the State booming.

According to Syiem, the packaging and quality of local wine-making has improved and these wines have tremendous markets in Shillong. “At present people are doing it as a hobby but Government should come forward to help develop it into an industry,” he told media persons.

The wine festival like previous years is exhibiting some finest quality wines made from different fruits and flavours to offer an array of choice for the visitors.

Altogether eleven wine-makers from the State and some from Mizoram are participating in the event.
