SGH groups seek DC’s action to stop illegal sugar, betel nut trade

TURA, March 8: Several groups from Nongalbibra area in South Garo Hills have submitted a complaint to the Deputy Commissioner demanding that necessary action be taken to stop the illegal sugar and betel nut trade to and from Bangladesh, which has been taking place on a regular basis.
Local organisations including the ACHIK, FKJGP, GSMC, AYWO and AOSW filed the joint complaint on Friday while expressing strong opposition as well condemnation against the illegal activity.
With regard to the reports of illegal import of betel nut (Supari) from the neighbouring country, the groups pointed out that it were not only causing losses to the government revenue but also affecting the business of the local traders and Arecanut farmers who cannot sell their produce.
The groups in their complaint urged the official to look into the matter and to take stern action against those involved in the illegal activities.
