Shillong, March 9: In a highly anticipated kickoff, Rangdajied United FC is set to face off against newly promoted Nongthymmai SC in the opening match of the Shillong Premier League. Amidst scheduling complexities, the precise match schedule is yet to be finalized but will be communicated shortly.
The commencement of the Shillong Premier League 2023, long overdue and beset by delays, is finally on the horizon, albeit with a unique twist. With time constraints looming large, the tournament will be conducted as a single-leg affair, a departure from its traditional format. While the exact commencement date remains undetermined, expectations are that the league will kick off within the next fortnight. Originally slated to begin in the preceding year, the delay stemmed primarily from logistical challenges, notably the installation of the new artificial turf at First Ground and scheduling conflicts due to the ground’s occupancy by Lajong FC and NEROCA for their I-League fixtures. The recent involvement of Meghalaya’s football contingent in the Santosh Trophy further contributed to the postponement, given the participation of several players contracted to SPL clubs. However, initiating the tournament this month poses its own set of logistical hurdles, particularly concerning the tight schedule.
