SHILLONG: Contrary to the BSF’s assessment that suspected ANVC-B cadres were behind the attack which resulted in the killing of two of the border guards’ constables on Friday, the splinter group of ANVC on Sunday claimed that the proscribed GNLA perpetrated the violent act in retaliation to the seizure of the latter’s weapons by the BSF recently.

According to ANVC(B), the GNLA cadres who attacked the BSF men on Friday had a plan to drop the ULFA cadres to receive the arms consignment which was seized by the BSF a day before.”The ULFA cadres had helped GNLA in the South Garo Hills ambush which resulted in the death of five policemen,” ANVC-B publicity secretary Doang D Shira said in a statement.

Shira reiterated that the GNLA planned to drop the ULFA cadres and receive a consignment from Bangladesh which was intercepted by the BSF.

He said the ANVC (B) had been in that area for more than a decade and never attempted any such act of violence. “The need to resort to violence does not arise now when we have already signed the peace settlement. The attack on BSF men was made to avenge and distract the security forces and also to blame ANVC(B),” he said.

The ANVC-B leader also revealed the modus operandi of GNLA militants who attacked two BSF personnel.

“The militants took a Sumo belonging to one Amul M. Sangma of Moheskola, which was driven by Sengbat of Kanai and out of ten, five wore camouflage to avoid being noticed and others were in formal including one in shorts,” the ANVC-B leader alleged.

According to Shira, the GNLA cadres entered a house belonging to one Bindu at Rongara from where they picked a boy named Anja Ch. Sangma and on reaching Moheskola they left the Sumo and moved through the cemetery road avoiding the police outpost.

“Amul and his father-in-law were asked to escort them to Rongdanggai where they spent the night at one Julius A Marak’s house,” the ANVC-B leader claimed adding that the next morning they moved out at around 3 am to Kaitakuna via Gilagora village.

The militants, the ANVC-B leader said, hatched a plan to attack the guards by pretending to be liquor smugglers.

“They shot from point blank range when the guards were checked their bags,” the ANVC(B) leader said adding that the Nokma of Kaitakuna, Pollen M. Marak and another person Moti A. Marak could provide vital information on this.

The ANVC-B also claimed that after the attack, the group moved back towards Garo Hills attacking one civilian at Rantanggre village in South Garo Hills. All the attackers wore a rosary, the ANVC-B leader added.
