TURA: The Government has undertaken measures to ensure that every child in the State is protected from discrimination through various proactive measures.

This was informed by Meghalaya Social Welfare Minister Deborah C Marak during the valedictory function of the two-day district level workshop on Integrated Child Protection Scheme (ICPS) at SMELC building at Dakopgre near here on Tuesday.

The workshop was organised jointly by the East, South and West Garo Hills District Child Protection Unit to sensitize stake holders on the ICPS, a Centrally-sponsored scheme aimed at building a protective environment for children in difficult circumstances, as well as other vulnerable children, through Government-Civil Society Partnership.

Lauding the efforts of the Social Welfare department in ensuring that the Rights of children are never disregarded in terms of juvenile justice and discrimination, Marak informed that the government had undertaken stringent measures to enforce laws ensuring the protection of children.

She asserted that the Social Welfare department of the State had accomplished much more compared to other states and said that the credit goes to all the dedicated officers and staff of the department. “The reason that there are fewer crimes against children in Meghalaya as compared to other states can be attributed to the fact that it is based on the foundation of matrilineal society,” Marak said.

She later informed that the Juvenile Justice Board, Child Welfare Committee and other concerned statutory bodies concerned with the ICPS was being established in the newly created districts of the State.

Certificates were awarded to participants of the two-day workshop by the Social Welfare Minister.

Among others who spoke on the occasion were NIPCCD Assistant Director Dr S Barik, Nokma Council president Skylance G Momin and West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Pravin Bakshi.
