Shillong, March 18: The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) today filed a Petition in the Supreme Court challenging the Rules of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019 with appealing the court to  issue a stay on its implementation.

It may be reminded that NESO, had filed a petition in the Supreme Count of India on 19th Dec, 2019 against the CAA, 2019. Even though, CAA, 2019 has exempted the ILP covered states which include Mizoram, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur and also the 6th Scheduled covered areas which include 98% of Meghalaya, 70% of Tripura and eight districts of Assam. But the rest of the districts of Assam are not exempted posing a serious threat to the entire North Eastern states’ future.

So, to protect the microscopic indigenous communities of NE which are already threatened by unabated influx of illegal migrants from Bangladesh, it is imperative that the CAA, 2019 should not be made applicable as it will worsen the already precarious situation of the North Eastern Region, according to a NESO statement issued by the Chairman Samuel Jyrwa.
