Waste disposal, hygiene points of concern

NONGSTOIN: The Khasi Students Union, Nonglang Unit along with KSU Mawshynrut Circle vice president Armstrong Sohshang inspected the Nonglang Primary Health Centre on November 13.

During their inspection they noticed that the functioning of the Primary Health Centre (PHC) at Nonglang village has allegedly collapsed due to the frequent absence of the attending doctor, villagers said and sought the intervention of the KSU.

It was also learnt that the appointed doctor of the said PHC Dr J.F.Pyngrope attended to patients only once or twice a week which causes severe inconvenience to the villagers.

The KSU Nonglang general secretary GR Nongsiej told media persons that Nonglang PHC caters to patients of almost 32 villages with a total population of 10,000 (ten thousand). With such a vast coverage, absence of the only doctor at the PHC causes the villagers to suffer immensely and at times proves fatal.

It was also learnt that most of the people from that area suffer from Malaria and Meningitis.

The KSU also found that Nonglang PHC did not observe proper and hygienic means of disposing the placenta after delivery. These placenta are either thrown away recklessly or disposed off under unhygienic conditions.

After the inspection, the KSU on Wednesday rushed to the District Medical & Health Officer (DMHO) West Khasi Hills Dr.P Lyngkhoi to apprise him of the grievances of the people of that area.

The KSU demanded the appointment of a Doctor who could serve the people and had the ability to maintain hygiene within the PHC campus. The DMHO assured the Union that the matter would be looked into at the earliest.
