Tura workshop to provide traditional Garo know-how

TURA, March 20: A five-day ‘Regional Workshop on Traditional Musical Instruments and Performing Arts’, organised by the A∙chik Literature Society in collaboration with the Department of Garo, NEHU Tura Campus and Department of Garo, Don Bosco College, Tura got under way recently.
The workshop, which was inaugurated by HoD of Garo, NEHU Tura campus, Dr. Jacqueline R. Marak, at the University premises, will conclude on Friday.
Over 76 participants had registered for the workshop, which lays focus on making and playing dama (drum), flutes and chigring, and learning the art of Wangala dance and Grika dance.
Addressing the inaugural programme, Dr. Marak said the workshop provides the participants a golden opportunity to get practical knowledge of the art of music and dance of the Garo tribe apart from the regular academic syllabus.
It may be mentioned that a majority of the participants were from NEHU, while the rest of the participants are from Tura Government College, Tura Christian College, Don Bosco College, Tura, ICFAI University and PA Sangma Foundation.
