Meghalaya finish second to last in 3rd North East Games 2024

Shillong, March 23: The culmination of the 3rd North East Games 2024 marked a thrilling finale, with Manipur asserting its dominance as the overall champion, solidifying its reputation as the powerhouse of northeastern sports.
However, amidst lofty promises from the Meghalaya Government and extensive efforts by various stakeholders, Meghalaya found itself second to last, just above Tripura, with a modest haul of 2 gold, 12 silver, and 41 bronze medals, totaling 55 medals from the highly anticipated tournament. This outcome inevitably raises questions regarding the disparity between expectations and tangible results.
Impressively, Manipur’s athletes showcased unparalleled skill and determination, amassing a remarkable total of 130 medals, including 52 gold, 38 silver, and 40 bronze. This impressive performance not only secured their status as champions of the previous two North East Games but also affirmed their undeniable victory in the 3rd edition.
Nagaland emerged as a formidable contender, claiming the 1st runner-up position in the medal tally with a total of 134 medals. Their exceptional display throughout the event, earning 48 gold, 42 silver, and 44 bronze medals, reflects the remarkable sportsmanship and growth of sports in the region, elevating them from the top 5 in previous games to the top 2 in the 3rd North East Games.
Meanwhile, Assam showcased commendable resilience and skill, securing the 3rd position with a total of 139 medals. Their journey to the top spot was fiercely competitive until the very end, with 43 gold, 44 silver, and 52 bronze medals highlighting the competitive spirit and dedication of their athletes.
In addition to the medal tally, special recognition was awarded to outstanding individuals and states for their exemplary contributions to the games. Sikkim was honored with the Fair Play Award for demonstrating the highest standards of sportsmanship and fair play throughout the event. Tripura received the Spirit of Olympic Award for embodying the values of sportsmanship, unity, and excellence.
Venuzo Dawhuo of Nagaland made history by winning gold medals in two different sports disciplines, earning him the Outstanding Sportsman Award. Dawhuo’s achievements in shot put, discus throw in athletics, and belt wrestling in the 100+ category were truly remarkable.
Tsuchoi. T of Nagaland was recognized as the Outstanding Sportswoman for her exceptional athleticism and versatility, securing four gold medals in athletics, including the 5000 meters, mixed rally, and women’s cross-country team events. Additionally, she secured two silver medals, further solidifying her status as a standout athlete in the competition.
As the 3rd North East Games 2024 draws to a close, heartfelt congratulations are extended to all participating states for their exemplary sportsmanship and unwavering commitment to excellence. Each state’s performance serves as a testament to the values of perseverance, dedication, and unity that define the spirit of the North East Games.
