TURA: Olympic bronze medalist and five-time world boxing champion Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom will arrive in Tura on her maiden visit to the Garo Hills where she will be the chief guest at the football final of the Tura MP Cup on November 23.

“Mary Kom has been personally invited by Tura MP Agatha K Sangma to be the chief guest at the football finals and she has accepted the offer,” confirmed Dadenggre MLA James Pangsang K Sangma, who is the older brother of Agatha Sangma.

He said that the North Eastern boxing legend will arrive here before noon and will grace the final of the Tura MP Cup at the MP Stadium where the match will be played.

The 30-year-old boxing champion and mother of three, who is also the only woman to win a medal in each one of the six world championships, will stay the night in Tura before leaving the following day.

The Manipur boxer was the only Indian woman boxer to qualify for the 2012 summer Olympics in London, where she won a bronze medal in the flyweight (51kg) category.

The Tura MP Cup, now in its eighth successive year, also played host to another sporting legend two years ago.

In 2011, football icon and then Indian team captain Baichung Bhutia was invited to be the chief guest and he witnessed the final of the MP Cup before a crowd of several thousand people who were treated to a brief display of professional football by the celebrity hero.
