SHILLONG, April 12: The Voice of the People Party (VPP) on Friday denounced the killing of 52-year-old Arjun Ray, a daily wage earner from Nongmensong, and urged the state government to ensure that the rule of law prevails in the state.
“The VPP, which fully commits to the Constitution of India and the principle of Rule of Law, condemns the cold-blooded murder of a labourer at Mawlai Mawroh,” VPP spokesperson Batskhem Myrboh said in a press statement.
“No one has the right to take the life of anyone. Right to life is the basic human right of each and every individual irrespective of community, ethnicity, race, caste and religion guaranteed both under the International as well as the laws of the country,” the statement said.
It added that the incident further tarnished the image of the state “which has already been known as the land of abuse of power and corruption perpetrated by those in power”.
All Faiths Forum appeals for peace
The Shillong All Faiths Forum (SAFF) on Friday expressed grave concern over the recent killings at Ichamati and Mawlai Mawroh.
“As faith leaders, all the members of the Shillong All Faiths Forum (SAFF) stand for peace, harmony and justice. Peace is a sign that God is with us. If we have God in ourselves and in our midst is peace. Peace is what God wants to give to humans and to humanity. We do have differences, but a difference in harmony,” SAFF secretary Fr. Richard M Majaw said in a statement.
SAFF appealed to all the citizens to maintain peace, harmony and amity among all the sections of people residing in the state and refrain from any form of hatred and violence.
“As we are heading for the polls, let us be calm and judicious. We urge the government to protect the citizens and prevent such violence in the state. Let us join hand in prayers so that we can live in peace and harmony,” the statement added.
