SHILLONG: The six-member ministerial committee which has been constituted to deliberate on the draft Meghalaya Regulation of Landlords and Verification of Tenants Bill was caught on the wrong foot on Wednesday when they failed to tackle the volley of questions on the Bill fired by students present at the U Soso Tham auditorium.
The lack of preparedness was evident as the committee members were unable to give “satisfactory replies” to the various queries of students following which the latter staged a walkout and tore the copies of the draft.
While questioning the lack of information with the committee members present at the venue, sources on Wednesday also raised doubts over the authenticity of those who tore the copies of the draft.
“Identity cards of the so-called students were never checked to ascertain if they were genuine,” sources said.
It was also learnt that even though students from IGNOU were not invited for the meeting one from the University posed several questions before the committee on Wednesday.
