SHILLONG, April 20: Shillong, once renowned for its cleanliness, is now grappling with garbage issues, prompting the District Administration of East Khasi Hills to take action.
Despite being a tourist hub, the city is marred by roadside dumping and cleanliness concerns.
East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner SC Sadhu, on Saturday, highlighted ongoing efforts with the Urban Affairs department and Shillong Municipal Board, emphasising consultations with stakeholders.
Post-elections, cleanliness will be a priority, with a focus on improving hygiene and appearance, the DC said. Collaborative efforts are under way to address the city’s cleanliness challenges, including the lack of dustbins, particularly evident in areas like Police Bazar.
Regarding penalties for offenders, the administration plans to review their effectiveness.
It is pertinent to note here that commercial areas like Motphran, Iewduh, and Mawlonghat require urgent attention to restore Shillong’s cleanliness.
