SHILLONG, April 20: One day since polling and parties are already anticipating a mandate in their favour with the VPP expecting a comfortable win in Shillong parliamentary seat while the NPP is in calculation mode awaiting reports from different constituencies to get a clear picture of the prospects.
It may be mentioned that the NPP has contested from both Shillong and Tura Lok Sabha constituencies, while the VPP vied only for the Shillong seat. “We are waiting for all the reports to reach the headquarters from the respective constituencies,” NPP Spokesperson HM Shangpliang said here on Saturday.
The NPP spokesperson expressed gratitude to the people for actively participating in the polls. He also conveyed appreciation to the supporters who rallied behind NPP candidates Ampareen Lyngdoh (Shillong) and Agatha Sangma (Tura) during their campaign. “We also like to convey our heartfelt gratitude to all the party workers for their relentless dedication and commitment towards the party,” Shangpliang said.
The VPP, on the other hand, has received positive inputs from all 36 constituencies that fall under the Shillong Lok Sabha seat.
Speaking to The Shillong Times here on Saturday, VPP Spokesperson Batskhem Myrboh said that the party candidate, Ricky AJ Syngkon, has garnered good feedback from all constituencies.
According to him, the party’s close rival is either the Congress or the NPP, depending on the constituency.
The VPP, however, is not carrying out any assessment of the number of votes secured by the party. “Other parties are doing assessment by maintaining a register since it involves money. But the VPP goes to the field to fight the election. We have full faith that the people have voted for us,” the VPP spokesperson said.
Disagreeing that there is a wave in favour of the party in view of the emotions attached with the ‘jaitbynriew’, Myrboh said that the mass support is due to political consciousness of the people.
