Parliament panel takes stock of State’s higher education scenario

Members visit city schools

SHILLONG: A team of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Human Resource Development is currently on a two-day visit to the State to review the functioning and performance of higher educational institutions in the State.

Education Department Secretary FR Kharkongor on Friday said that the Committee wanted to get an idea of the functioning of premier institutes such as NEHU, IIM and NIT.

During their visit, the team is slated to gather information about the challenges faced by the higher educational institutions in the State and accordingly prepare a report on the same.

On Friday, the team visited BK Bajoria School and Assam Rifles Public School in the city and interacted with the school management, teachers and students. The committee members also inspected the hostels, dining hall and other areas of the schools.

The Committee also met representatives of other North Eastern states to discuss the functioning of Central institutes located across the North East region.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee is led by Rajya Sabha member Birender Singh.

Senior officials of the Rajya Sabha Secretariat, HRD Ministry and Autonomous Bodies as well as the Central Board of Secondary Education and various other officials accompanied the members.
