SHILLONG, April 22: The police have finally made up their minds to act against reckless riding by motorists in the city.
Lately, Shillong has seen an increase in the number of reckless two-wheeler riders who disregard the safety of others and even traffic rules.
The Superintendent of Police of East Khasi Hills, Rituraj Ravi, has directed the in-charges of all traffic branches to conduct a week-long checking drive, which started on Monday.
This action comes following instances of motorcyclists in Shillong violating traffic rules and causing a nuisance to the general public.
In addition, police have also observed that some two-wheeler riders have the habit of riding dangerously and speeding, posing a threat to other road-users.
The SP has also instructed that stringent action must be taken against the violators as per the provisions of the law.
During the checks, ICs of Traffic branches have been told to emphasise modified/altered exhaust pipes, riding under the influence of alcohol, dangerous, rash and negligent riding, improper (or absent) display of registration number plates, and underage children riding motorcycles, in addition to other Motor Vehicle Act violations.
Complying with the SP’s directives, the Shillong Traffic Police conducted checks on Monday to prevent overtaking and overall reckless driving in all sectors, while also keeping an eye out for retrofit exhaust pipes.
Two modified silencers were detected on the day.
Last week, the police had detected 10 modified silencers.
