SHILLONG, April 25: Cabinet minister and BJP leader Alexander L Hek on Thursday played down the fear that his party’s move to support the NPP in the just-concluded Lok Sabha elections could have backfired for the latter.
He said the BJP supported the NPP in Meghalaya according to the directive of its central leadership and they are confident that the NPP would win both the seats for the NDA.
“It cannot be a blunder as the support was extended to the NDA partners throughout the country, not only in Meghalaya,” he said.
Asked about the possibility of BJP workers having gone against the diktat and voted for other parties, Hek said it cannot be assessed easily.
On the allegations that the BJP workers were not given any logistical support by the party to work for the NPP, he said the NPP had to manage the logistics as the election was contested on its party symbol.
Some disgruntled leaders had slammed the state BJP leadership over the Lok Sabha poll strategy, indicating the party’s support for the NPP in Meghalaya may have backfired.
They said the BJP’s central leadership decided not to contest the elections in Meghalaya as there are many tainted leaders in the state unit of the party.
