Reviving Umshyrpi and Wahumkhrah rivers

HILLONG: The condition of River Umshyrpi and Wahumkhrah is deteriorating with each passing day and the rivers are dying a slow death even as the State Government is waiting for the approval of the preservation plan by the Central Government.

To preserve these two rivers from further dwindling, State Water Resources department prepared a Rs 50-crore Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Wahumkhrah Umshyrpi River management project for the protection of two rivers.

Water Resources Minister Rowell Lyngdoh said the Government was still awaiting the approval of the DPR.

He said that the DPR is pending with the Central Water Commission and they are examining the technical and financial details of the DPR.

The DPR that awaits the approval of the Central Government is intended to tackle floods caused by the two rivers during the monsoon and Government plans to construct drains on the small streams which lead to the Wahumkhrah.

Under the proposed scheme, Government would take steps to create awareness about preserving and protecting the rivers.

He said the department submitted the proposal to the Union Government after passing it through several statutory authorities that deals with water resources.

The Wahumkhrah and Umshyrpi River has suffered many jolts due to constant encroaching and dumping of waste into the rivers resulting in its pollution.
