Lok Sabha election

SHILLONG: The State Congress is confident of winning Tura seat this time in the upcoming Lok Sabha election scheduled to be held in 2014.

“It will be a cakewalk for Congress in Tura,” said the MPCC working president Deborah Marak.

Tura seat is a cause of concern for Congress since Purno Sangma’s family still holds a grip over this constituency.

However, Congress is confident of a turn around this time because of the developmental activities initiated by the Congress-led state government.

While there are four aspirants including former Union Minister Vincent H Pala for the party ticket for the Shillong seat, a total of nine aspirants, including a lady, have applied for Congress ticket for Tura seat.

While refusing to admit that NPP is still a force to reckon with in Garo Hills, Marak, who is also a Cabinet Minister, said that the last Assembly had indicated that people are for development of their constituency.

Reacting to a query on the proposed move of non-Congress parties to come under one banner to take on Congress, Deborah Marak said, “It shows their weakness and we don’t need all these things. “

In the past, many Congress leaders including incumbent Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma, Cabinet Ministers Deborah Marak and Zenith Sangma had contested Lok Sabha elections for Tura seat against Purno Sangma or his daughter Agatha Sangma. Agatha is the sitting MP from Tura.
