SHILLONG, April 27: North-Eastern Hill University Vice Chancellor Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla has stressed the need for the youths to come forward and protect and promote their official languages and mother tongue.
Addressing a one-day seminar on ‘North East Language Conference’ at the NEHU, Prof. Shukla said that languages impact the daily lives of one and all.
He also spoke about the importance of mother tongue, official languages and international languages in the National Education Policy 2020.
Stating that mother tongue cannot be learned without literature, he exhorted the youths to have a sense of love and respect towards their mother tongue and official languages.
It may be mentioned that the seminar was organised by the NEHU and the Faculty of Humanities and Indian Language Committee of Education Ministry.
Meanwhile, Meghalaya DGP L.R. Bishnoi, who attended the seminar as the chief guest, informed that India is the only country where around 1600 dialects are spoken.
He said the beauty of any mother tongue is contained in its folk culture, so people coming from outside and visiting Meghalaya should have an interest and desire to learn the languages here.
“If we have a sense of love, affection and respect towards these local languages, then our interest in them will increase even more,” he said, adding that learning local languages can help one and all stay connected.
On the other hand, the Chairman of the Indian Language Committee, Chmu Krishna Shastri, presented his views and discussions about the importance of languages in human life from the virtual stage.
Local leaders, who were also part of the seminar, stressed the promotion of local language.
