SHILLONG, April 27: The UDP-led Opposition in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) is anticipating the completion of the delimitation committee’s report by the next session. The committee is tasked with adjusting and balancing the number of electorates across the 29 district council constituencies. “During the last session, we discussed that the delimitation committee requested additional time. We hope they can finalise the report by the upcoming session,” stated Titosstarwell Chyne, Leader of the Opposition in the KHADC.
He, however, admitted being unaware of the current status of the delimitation committee.
When asked about potential consequences of further delays, Chyne mentioned a constitutional provision allowing for a six-month extension. “Voters inquire about MDC elections frequently, especially now after the MP elections. Let’s relax and wait for the next election,” he remarked.
It may be recalled that the state government extended the tenure of both the JHADC and KHADC by six months following Cabinet approval. The terms of the KHADC and JHADC ended on March 4. Despite criticism, the state government defended its decision, citing the district councils’ request for additional time to redraw several constituencies.
