SHILLONG, April 28: The KHADC is confirming from the Revenue department whether the state government has notified any local name for Khanapara village under Ri-Bhoi.
The council approached the Revenue department after receiving suggestion from KHNAM to replace the name of Khanapara with a Khasi name. KHADC CEM Pyniaid Sing Syiem said he had spoken with some people and learnt that the name “Khanapara” had historical significance.
He said that he spoke with the traditional heads of Them Ri-Bhoi area who informed him that Khanapara has now been renamed as “Them Marwet”.
“We are trying to get the correct information to decide how to move forward,” Syiem added.
Earlier, KHNAM had urged the KHADC to replace the name of Khanapara with a Khasi name.
KHNAM working president Thomas A Passah said Khanapara village, which is located along the interstate border with Assam, should have a Khasi name as this would be a crucial factor if the state wants to stake its claim to this particular village which falls under Meghalaya.
He said that they will officially write to the KHADC CEM on this matter shortly.
Mentioning that the KHADC asked the party to suggest Khasi names for Khanapara, Passah appealed to people well verse with the history of the area to suggest Khasi names for the village.
