SHILLONG, April 29: Deferred for a prolonged period of time now, the appointment of the Chairperson of the Meghalaya State Commission for Women (MSCW) seems to have been further delayed due to the model code of conduct (MCC) coming into force in view of the ongoing Lok Sabha polls.
The MCC came into force when Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma was about to convene a meeting to finalise the name of the new chairperson, sources said on Monday.
The Chief Minister was reportedly going to endorse the file after finalising the name. “But now the appointment of the new chairperson will happen only after the Lok Sabha polls,” sources said.
It may be mentioned that a total of six contenders are running for the position of chairperson.
Social Welfare Minister Paul Lyngdoh had earlier announced that two more applications had been received in addition to the four names recommended by the government-appointed search committee.
The MSCW has been without a chairperson since Phidalia Toi tendered her resignation in June last year.
The Civil Society Women’s Organisation (CSWO) and the VPP had also questioned the delay in the appointment of the new chairperson.
