SHILLONG, April 30: As part of the diamond jubilee celebrations of Shillong Law College, the Women Cell of the Internal Quality Assessment Committee (IQAC) organised a street play on awareness about violence against women and gender neutral laws at Dhankheti point here on Tuesday.
A sizeable number of people gathered at Dhankheti point to witness the street play performed by college students sensitising people on various provisions of law relating to domestic violence, prevention of sexual harassment, right to equality and so on.
The Vice Principal of Shillong Law College, Mrinalini Kharshiing, and Convener of the Women’s Cell, Wanrishisha Dkhar, along with other faculties were also present.
Speaking to reporters, Kharshiing emphasised the importance of people being aware about their rights.
She queried as to why women are subject to abuse despite the presence of several laws for the protection of women. She then contended that the main reason behind this is the lack of awareness among women about their rights and laws for their protection.
Meanwhile, Convener of the Women’s Cell, Wanrishisha Dkhar, stressed on the significance and relevance of the event and its likes, adding that there have been cases of sexual harassment at work place and domestic violence, besides cyber crime, which is on the rise in the society.
She said that events like the one conducted by the college becomes relevant, especially in the era of social media where people share videos and pictures which can be damaging. “But people do not know whom to approach or where to file their complaints if they are victims of sexual assault, domestic violence or even cyber crime,” Dkhar said.
