Prog raises legal awareness on substance abuse

JOWAI, May 1: In a bid to raise awareness about substance abuse’s detrimental effects and sensitise the youth on drug-related issues and preventive measures related to the subject, a legal awareness programme on ‘Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substance Act, 1985’ was on Tuesday organised by the District Legal Services Authority (DSLA), West Jaintia Hills, at the Multipurpose Hall of Kiang Nangbah Government College, Jowai, under the aegis of National Legal Services Authority.
Chief Legal Aid Defense Counsel, S Phyllei, opened the programme with an introductory speech and served as the host.
Dr JP Sharma, Associate Professor of Kiang Nangbah Government College, welcomed the attendees, including students from various colleges and schools.
The event featured speeches and presentations by esteemed guests like MHJS, District and Sessions Judge -cum- Chairman, District Legal Services Authority, West Jaintia Hills, NA Khan, who spoke in depth about the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substance Act, 1985, and emphasised the importance of such initiatives in fostering legal awareness and civic participation among teachers and students.
Other resource persons provided insights into the role of law enforcement and community efforts in combating substance abuse.
The program concluded with an interactive session and a vote of thanks from B Majaw, MJS, Secretary, District Legal Services Authority, West Jaintia Hills.
