13-year-old conferred with Bravery Award for saving girl from drowning

MAWKYRWAT, May 3: In a bid to recognise the act of courage of a 13-year-old boy, Elambok Dkhar, the Dorbar Shnong Wahsiej, Maharam Syiemship, South West Khasi Hills, on Friday conferred him with Bravery Award during a programme here.
On April 21, 2024, two minor girls from Wahsiej village, namely Shabakmenlang Wanniang (16) and (L) Aishabankmen Thongni (14) accidentally drowned while swimming in Thwei Breimeirit, Rilang River.
Observing the two girls drowning, Saphibanroy Thongni (15), the elder sister of Aishabankmen, tried to save her sister as she struggled in the water. During the rescue process, Saphibanroy was dragged into the deep water and nearly drowned herself.
Fortunately, Elambok, who hails from Wahsiej village, happened to be swimming upstream. On noticing Saphibanroy struggling, he immediately plunged into the water and rescued her.
During the programme on Friday, the Dorbar Shnong also felicitated Lambok Thongni (50) from Wahsiej village for his courageous act of recovering two bodies from the Rilang River single-handedly.
South West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, who was the chief guest during the programme, the recognition of the acts of bravery was the right thing to do.
Informing about the central recognition to such acts of bravery, the DC said that the district administration will make substantial efforts to ensure Elambok receives the award.
In addition to the Dorbar Shnong Wahsiej, other organisations that honoured the 13-year-old include Seng Samla Shnong Wahsiej, Social Economic Life and Development (SELD) Committee of the Jingiaseng Samla Balang Presbyterian Wahsiej, Iatreilang Village Organisation, Wahsiej Sports Club, Wahsiej Govt LP School, Banrikynti LP School, as well as the Church of God Lower Primary School.
