IMPHAL: In all, 36 children from Manipur have been sent back to the state with the help of Bangalore Police and some NGOs after they were found subjected to maltreatment and physical torture at a children home in Bengaluru.
It cannot be officially confirmed if any individual or group was responsible for taking the children to Bangalore and whether it was a case of child trafficking. Sources said they had been promised free education at the home.
The children—11 girls and 25 boys—from Senapati, Ukhrul, Churachandpur and Bishnupur districts, were rescued and taken back from Grace Children Home, Bangalore by the city’s police and officials of Karnataka state Social Welfare Department. Then, members of Bangalore based NGOs and the Police sent them back till Guwahati on November 22.
From Guwahati, they were brought to Imphal by a joint team from Manipur Police, Child Welfare Committees and some officials of the state Social Welfare Department on November 23. They have been kept under the protection of the Social Welfare Department’s Observation Home here. (NNN)
