SHILLONG, May 6: The HYC on Monday demanded the removal of the waste disposal facility of the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) at Motphran citing numerous complaints from the public.
In a petition submitted to SMB Chief Executive Officer PK Boro, HYC vice president Francis G Mawlong said that the organisation on May 2 had conducted a spot inspection of the waste disposal facility at Motphran after receiving complaints from the general public.
“During inspection, we found that the said facility belonging to the SMB meant for waste disposal and collection of wastes, not only produces foul and unhygienic smell but it is also affecting the general public including passers-by,” Mawlong said.
Besides hygiene issues, the HYC leader also flagged the purported use of the facility by drug peddlers who take shelter in the corner of the waste disposal facility to conduct their nefarious activities.
“These activities are happening during the day. We have apprehended the people using drugs at the place itself during our visit. The existence of this facility is not only providing a safe place for them to do drugs publicly but also turning Motphran into an open Marten area, which is unacceptable and condemned by one and all as the wastes are left uncovered and strewn on the roads in the heart of the city,” Mawlong said.
Warning of doing the needful themselves, the HYC has asked the SMB to remove the said facility forthwith and sanitise the affected area.
