SHILLONG, May 11: An exhibition day was hosted to mark the culmination of the second learning cycle for the students of the Community Managed Youth Center (CMYC), in Sunei, Mawphlang, on Saturday.
The event showcased the essence of self-directed learning and highlighted the achievements of its participants.
In rural Meghalaya, Project DEFY and Sauramandala Foundation have pioneered self-designed learning spaces in these centres. They empower learners of all ages to explore diverse subjects such as bakery, carpentry, coding, electronics, sports, arts, and music. With a focus on experiential learning, individuals set their own goals and design their learning modules, becoming problem solvers in their communities.
A panel discussion on self-designed learning was also held, where learners and facilitators shared their experiences and insights. They delved into the principles and advantages of self-directed education, emphasising its role in enhancing creativity and problem-solving skills.
The event also featured stalls exhibiting unique garments and baked goods crafted by the learners themselves. These creations added vibrancy to the occasion, showcasing the talents nurtured within the CMYC.
One standout attraction was COCO Soap, produced by the learners, which quickly sold out due to its quality and personal touch.
Adding a touch of sport and community engagement, friendly matches of Ultimate Frisbee were held between teams from various CMYCs and Faith Foundation, Shillong.
Complementing the festivities, a free TB screening event underscored the holistic approach to community well-being embraced by the CMYCs.
