Breakthrough in Bishnupur arson case

SHILLONG: Police on Friday arrested KSU Lawsohtun unit general secretary Readystone Nongrum along with another member of the unit, Shemphang Nongkynrih, for their alleged involvement in the Bishnupur arson case.

The KSU members were arrested from a vehicle near Elephant Falls, Upper Shillong while they were returning from Nongstoin.

East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police M Kharkrang said that this was a major breakthrough for the district police as the two along with two other accomplices had gone into hiding after committing the crime.

It was on November 16 that Bisheshwar Das, a tea stall owner, was set on fire inside his stall at Bishnupur area. He is undergoing treatment at Nemcare hospital in Guwahati.

After the arrest of the duo, Nongstoin Police later arrested Peter Lyngkhoi and Johny Sohkhlet from their hide out, Kharkrang informed.

Police suspect them to be the accomplices in the crime.

While Sohkhlet had resigned from KSU a few years back, it is yet to be known whether Lyngkhoi is still actively associated with the KSU.

“We are interrogating if they are also involved in the arson case at the tea stall in Bishnupur where the owner sustained burn injuries,” the SP said.

Earlier, two KSU members identified as Wankerlang Jyrwa and Badonkupar Nongbri were arrested in connection with the arson attack on city trader Vikash Nandwal who succumbed to his injuries on October 26.
