SHILLONG, May 15: The Department of Sociology of St. Edmunds College on Wednesday launched a documentary titled ‘Nongkrem Dance: A Sociological Spectrum’.
This documentary distinguishes itself by exploring the Nongkrem Dance through the lenses of social behaviour, social change, and the social causes and consequences of human behaviour.
The documentary includes a detailed look at the rituals preceding the final day of the Shad Nongkrem and features a Q&A session with the Syiem of Hima Khyrim.
The launch event was attended by Syiem Khynnah of Hima Khyrim, Habapan Syiem, as the chief guest, who officially released the documentary.
Iamonlang Syiem, former Chairperson of the Meghalaya State Commission for the Protection of Child Rights and the Founder-Head of the Department of Sociology at St. Edmund’s College, attended the event as the Guest of Honour.
In addition to the documentary launch, the fourth edition of the department’s magazine,  ‘Societus’, was also released by the guests.
Meanwhile, Finley EJ Syngai, Head of the Department of Sociology, informed that while they captured many discreet visuals where outsiders are not typically allowed, they chose not to include the same in the documentary to maintain the sanctity of the rituals.
